We hope everyone can take an extra couple of days to enjoy the North Coast. Lots of specific suggestions are available from the Humboldt County Visitors Bureau and the Humboldt Bay Tourism Center. The map below (full version available here) should help get you started.
For those interested in seeing northern California's famed redwood forests - there are several easy options. If you are traveling north from the Bay Area, Avenue of the Giants offers an easy scenic route that runs parallel to Highway 101 beginning north of Redway. If you are coming south from Oregon on 101, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park are about 45 minutes north of Arcata. They are spectacular and you are almost guaranteed to see elk. Both Avenue of the Giants and the state and national parks are suited to both car tourism and hiking.
For those looking to explore a little closer to Arcata, there are scene beaches at Trinidad, Patrick's Point and Clam Beach. If you visit the North Jetty outside Eureka you will see many of the local surfers and maybe some seal.
For those interested in shopping, downtown Arcata, Old Town Eureka and Historic Ferndale have a mix of shops featuring local artists. The Saturday morning farmer's market in Arcata is worth a trip.
Of course, Northern California has lots to offer beyond Humboldt County. San Francisco is well-known as the San Francisco of the United States. And there's much to see and do between San Francisco and the Oregon border; more information is available here. For those interested in wine tasting, we are happy to share some thoughts on our favorite places to visit in Napa and Sonoma.
